Building Community Through Design: The Birth of Design Jam

In the aftermath of the COVID era, as we all started to reconnect, I found myself in a new city craving meaningful connections. I wasn't just looking for any connection; I sought relationships that would challenge and elevate me within my field of branding design. This desire led to a chance meeting with a few local designers. One conversation stood out—a fellow designer mentioned how much she would value from a design group and wished for more opportunities to connect. That moment sparked a realization: we were all seeking deeper connections. Inspired, I knew what I had to do. Thus, Design Jam was born.

The idea for Design Jam emerged from a simple yet profound need to create a community of like-minded designers who could share, learn, and grow together. With no existing platform that fit this vision, I set out to turn the concept into reality. The enthusiasm for such a community was clear from my initial interactions, motivating me to establish a network where creativity and support could thrive.

Determined to bring this vision to life, I spent hours on Instagram, Google, and Facebook, identifying local designers who shared this craving for connection. Each profile discovery was a step closer to building our community. I initiated an Instagram group to introduce everyone, setting the next steps for our first physical gathering.

Our inaugural Design Jam was an eye-opener. It was more than just a meetup; it was about sharing the often unseen challenges of working from home as a graphic designer and exploring ways we could support each other. This first session not only connected us but also highlighted areas in my own professional practice that needed adjustment—I realized I had been undercharging for my services.

The support and encouragement from the group were transformative. They bolstered my confidence to value my work appropriately and adjust my rates. These gatherings proved essential for our continuous professional development, offering a space where we could all learn from each other's experiences and insights, regardless of our career stages.

The success of our initial meetings has only deepened my commitment to hosting our next Design Jam. I look forward to each meet-up, excited by the potential to grow our community and continue our discussions. These aren’t just meetings; they’re vital for any branding designer eager to navigate the complexities of our vibrant industry.

Design Jam started from a personal quest for connection and has blossomed into a wonderful small community of designers who inspire and propel each other forward. As we continue to support and learn from one another, I am continually reminded of the power of connection and the endless possibilities it brings to our professional and personal lives.
