The writers are not afraid to go to extremes for a laugh, whether it's having Roger impersonate a country singer, Klaus trying to steal Francine away from Stan, or Steve inventing a time machine that goes horribly wrong. And yet, despite the show's zaniness, there's a certain charm and likability to the characters that makes you root for them even when they're making a mess of things.
At the heart of American Dad is the relationship between Stan and his family, which is both dysfunctional and touching. Despite his conservative values and paranoid tendencies, Stan truly loves his wife and children and will do anything to protect them from harm. Meanwhile, Francine, Hayley, and Steve may not always see eye to eye with their father, but they know he means well and that he has their best interests at heart.
But what really sets American Dad apart is the way it tackles the idea of living with an alien. Roger isn't just any ordinary extraterrestrial – he has multiple personalities and frequently assumes different identities. Watching the Smith family try to navigate life with an alien who can't figure out who ‘they’ are in our world is both hilarious and surprisingly relatable.
All in all, American Dad is a show that's not afraid to push the boundaries of what's acceptable or normal, and that's what makes it so enjoyable to watch.
